In Nepal, the mountain is called Sagarmatha (Sanskrit for "Forehead of the Sky") and in Tibetan Chomolangma or Qomolangma ("Mother of the Universe"), pronounced in Chinese 珠穆朗玛峰 ( pinyin: Zhūmùlǎngmǎ Fēng). Although named in honour of Sir George Everest, the popular pronunciation of Everest (EV-uh-rist, IPA: [??v?rist]) is different from how Sir George pronounced his own last name (EV-uh-rest).
